USING MODEL BUILDER AND TASKS TO FIND A SUITABLE LOCATION FOR A PROPOSED UNIVERSITY LAB
Assignment:
Use Model Builder and an Esri Task to guide someone through the steps of the following workflow.
A local university plans to construct a small lab and office building for performing research projects in aquaculture. They have narrowed the area down to a coastal farming area near several small towns. Now they need to select specific site(s) that meets the following requirements:
At least 2,000 square meters in size.
Must overlie soils suitable for construction of buildings.
The site should not be forested (to eliminate the cost of clearing land) and a regional agricultural preservation plan prohibits converting farmland in this area, so brush land is the only suitable landuse type.
A local ordinance designed to prevent rampant development allows new construction only within 300 meters of existing sewer lines.
A recent national water quality act requires that no construction occur within 20 meters of streams.
The task is to locate potential sites that meet these requirements. Below is a summary of the criteria for the project:
Site must be within 300 meters of existing sewer lines
Site must be beyond 20 meters of existing streams
Choose soil types suitable for development
Preferred land use is brush land
Site must contain an area of at least 2,000 square meters
The completed model in Model Builder
A video illustrating a walkthrough of the task
Starting base map with roads, streams and soil stability
The final proposed university lab sites selected on the necessary criteria
